Welcome to the PostDoc Place

- We are a group of postdoctoral fellows from the Psychology Department (but welcoming others from other units, e.g. Neuroscience, Speech Language and Hearing, Psychology, Philosophy, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology). Our goal is to provide support and allow for the sharing of professional development information among postdocs. We meet once or twice a month. How are they different from other types of faculty searches? What are some of the criteria used to select applicants? What are the expectation of new recruits in the first few years? • Thursday, Dec 2nd, 2021, 10am, Zoom Q&A: Non-academic careers for postdocs: Dr. Hellen Whithaker will joing us from England and tell us about jobs in the Scientic Publishing world.
  Helen is a Publisher of Medicine and Life Science journals at Springer Nature. She obtained her PhD in molecular ecology from the University of Glasgow, UK. Her post-doctoral studies in aquaculture genetics took her from Scotland to South Africa. She joined the pioneering open access publisher, BioMed Central, in 2008 as a Scientific Editor for the BMC series. She remained with this company that has since merged with Springer and subsequently Nature Publishing Group. Helen currently manages a portfolio of biotechnology and biomedical engineering journals, and has wider responsibility for content acquisition in Medicine and Life Sciences.

How do you know when to 'stop' a project? How do you know you have enough for a publication? For a conference? How many (different) projects should you be working on? How do you match a project to a student?
