Emotion: Region Level: Hypothalamus
- Hypothalamus and Emotion:
- Stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus (cats) produce typical motor responses
analogous to 'anger' or sham rage (Cannon & Britton, 1925; Bard 1928).
- Part of the Papez circuit (mammiliary body).
- Limbic site of emotional expression (MacLean, 1949).
- Some areas of the hypothalamus (perifornical region and medial portion of the lateral hypothalamus) form the
HACER (Hypothalamic Areas Controlling Emotional Responses). HACER receives projections from the septal nucleus, amygdala, pre-optic area,
diagonal band of Broca, and central gray.HACER projects to the intermediolateral column (in thoracic cord, autonomic cells) (Smith, De Vito et al 1990; Smith and De Vito, 1984).
- Self-Stimulations studies (Olds, 1977).
