According to Rolls, emotions are states elicited by reinforcing stimuli.
The amygdala
participate in the formation of stimulus-reinforcement associations, while
the orbitofrontal
cortex is involved in modifying these association upon changes in stimulus
contingencies (Rolls
1986). Emotion have 6 main functions: Elicitation of autonomic responses,
flexibility of behavioral response to reinforcing stimuli, motivation,
communication, social bonding and survival (Rolls
1999).
